Quadrant Study
Students will select an ecosystem such as wooded area, field, or bog (but not water). Students will designate an area to study the plants, animals and how together they live in this environment. A plant identification and soil profile will be taken. Each day a study of the weather and how it affects the ecosystem will be logged. Students will work in groups to allow for the development of team and the distribution of work.
Lake Zonation
A study of the aquatic life that introduces students to the life-cycle in and surrounding the lake. Study the needs and uses of the lake to the ecosystem. Physical factors observed will include water temperature, turbidity, pH testing, and testing for other substances that are present. Collect and identify plants and animal life in the lake and along the shore.
Orienteering
Learn the skill of finding your way in the out-of-doors with a compass (pace and taking bearings). Utilizing several courses, students will put this knowledge to use in the fields/forests of Luther Springs.
Cinquain Poetry
Write poetry using nature as the subject.
Leaf I.D.
Recognize likenesses and differences of leaf structure (shape, margins, tips) necessary for identification.
Nature Scavenger Hunt
Trek through nature on a hunt for different plants, animals and more. See how many you can find!
Adaptations
Invent an animal that is camouflaged from its environment. Using materials given, the animals are placed in the environment and teams switch and search for the hidden animal.
ASE (Action Socialization Experiences)
This challenge course consists of a number of situations which require students to work as a group. Some of the situations (elements) are Spider Web, Climbing Wall, Island and Whale Watch.
Nature’s Camouflage
We will study how adaptive color camouflage helps a plant or an animal adapt to its environment.
Stump Scouting/Study of a Rotten Log
Gopher Tortoise
Gopher Tortoise burrows are widely used by other species within the local ecosystem. Known for their ability to dig large deep burrows, we will study how the Gopher Tortoise burrow plays a pivotal role in their native environment.
